The Great Debates 1/5/2008

I’m sitting here watching the presidential debate, with the national press and the pundits covering and commentating on this primary. We need this, and more, in Johnstown.

The fact is that our local elections will have significantly greater impact on our lives than any president ever will. And yet, when was the last time you heard a vigorous debate on the issues here locally? Can any of you say that you know where your politicians, many of whom have been in their offices for decades, stand on the great issues of the day?

All of that changes this year. I will force debates on the issues to happen. I will strongly encourage local media outlets to sponsor debates for the three House seats currently being vacated by their incumbents. I will work with my opponents in the primary and general elections to arrange debates. And if they won’t agree to debate, I will go ahead and schedule debates and force them to the table.

The stakes are simply to high to allow these races to happen without a healthy discussion of the issues.

Get ready for a rip-roaring good time and a great election process at the same time.
