Taxing Times in Central Cambria 1/21/2008

The Tribune-Democrat reported this morning that yet another property tax increase is likely for the Central Cambria school district.

As a believer in local control, I feel the last thing in the world the folks in the Central Cambria school district need is a sitting or aspiring state legislator telling them how to run their business.

But I’m also a believer in fiscal austerity in government, at any level, and I can’t help but agree with school board member Patricia Allbaugh that they should operate “within the confines of our budget, which appears to me to be adequate without any increases in taxes.”

If elected to the House, I will maintain my belief in local autonomy, but I will not shy away from commenting (not directing) in some matters even if they are beyond my sphere of influence.

In this case, I would strongly urge school board members to manage the school budget as they manage their household budgets.
