Free Stuff!!! 1/14/2008
The Tribune-Democrat reported this morning we have a new entrant into the field.
Again, this is great news for those of us who want a vigorous debate on the important issues facing this district, this entire region, and Pennsylvania as a whole.
This latest candidate, like most candidates, tells us that his priorities are funding for lots of stuff. And that really sounds great on the campaign trail.
The problem is that the only way to get stuff for your district is to sell your soul to the legislators from all the other districts, particularly those from the big cities. You promise to vote for all their stuff, and they’ll vote for our measly hand-outs.
But this means continued government spending, in many cases on frivolous things. We simply can’t reduce the size and scope of government, and the oppressive tax and regulatory burdens facing Pennsylvanians, if our legislators are cutting deals with each other to bribe their constituents with free stuff.
My campaign is all about what your parents and grandparents told you. There’s no such thing as a free lunch.
