Flight 93 Extravaganza 1/23/2008
Those of us who live in the vicinity of Shanksville know about the massive plans for a memorial to those who fought the terrorists on Flight 93.
I attended a meeting today at the home of a concerned citizen who invited a few of us, including a few elected officials, to listen to someone who makes the claim that the planned memorial is actually sympathetic to Muslims.
I made the point that spending $60 million on this memorial was itself an abomination, even if there were no Muslim themes.
It just seems a little unseeemly to me that we would turn that sacred ground into a spectacle, a large “memorial” that would have commercialism surrounding it.
I suggested that a large stone with a plaque on it might be more appropriate, and more affordable.
My hope is that this controversy over the allegations of Muslim undertones causes the whole project to be re-analyzed, and people come to their senses and erect a more modest tribute to the fallen heroes of 9-11.
